Please join us via Zoom on Thursday, July 31 for our quarterly lecture series. We are so pleased to welcome speaker Lauren Arrington who 's talk will focus on Lenore Thomas (Straus). Arrington has been researching the sculptor as part of an upcoming book. She explores Lenore Thomas’s career as an artist, using the silences in Thomas’s archive to speak to her work for social justice. The talk will include Thomas’s cancelled anti-lynching sculpture in the context of the sculpture friezes that she created for Greenbelt, Maryland, one of the first planned towns in the United States.
Arrington is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Humanities Public Scholars award, the Robert and Ina Caro Award from Biographers International Organization, and visiting fellowships to the New York Public Library and Cambridge University, among others. Her doctorate is from Oxford University. This talk on Lenore Thomas draws from Lauren’s new book, forthcoming with St Martin’s Press next year.
This is a virtual event. Please register in advance via Eventbrite. An email with a Zoom link will be sent prior to the date of talk. The talk will be recorded. This event is free! Sponsored by the Friends of the Greenbelt Museum and the City of Greenbelt.
